Orinigiri Package Design

Orinigiri

Orinigiri is a food packaging design for Japanese rice balls. The name combines origami, the traditional art of paper folding, and onigiri, rice shaped by hand. The package is folded like origami, and the folded form is used to press and shape the rice. Users craft the paper, squeeze the rice and then eat the result. Each rice ball can take a unique shape. Origami is handed down from generation to generation, and onigiri carries the warmth of the hands that mold it. Orinigiri joins both traditions to share Japanese culture and playful communication at the table.

Orinigiri Package Design by Tomoo Nitta was recognized as an exceptional representation of product design by the A' Design Award & Competition. Orinigiri Package Design earned the Iron A' Design Award in Food, Beverage and Culinary Arts Design in 2021. The A' Food, Beverage and Culinary Arts Design Award is an international, jury-voted, fair and ethical design accolade that rewards superior design of design for food, design with food, food servings, tasting menus, cocktails, desserts, entrées, main dishes, culinary experiences and more.
