Spectrum Illustration

Spectrum

Spectrum is a digital illustration that depicts Japanese street fashion in the style of Japanese anime. The work avoids photorealism and applies vivid colors in a flat manner that still appears optically natural. The background represents the neon lights of Tokyo, with forms boldly simplified for a sharp, flat and luminous effect. Elements of Western graphic design are combined with Japanese character illustration. Spectrum was drawn with Adobe Photoshop CC. The intent is to make the style clear to audiences inside and outside Japan.

Spectrum Illustration by Arata Yokoyama has been recognized as a grand illustration of communication design by the A' Design Award. Spectrum Illustration received the Bronze A' Design Award in Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design in 2023. The A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award is a juried, academic and highly prestigious design award that recognizes superior design of logos, posters, infographics, brochures, packaging designs, business cards, book covers, billboards and more.
