Doonya Shop and Home for Homeless

Doonya

Doonya is a modular shelter unit that combines a home and a small shop for people without housing. Each unit measures 6 metres by 3 metres, giving 18 square metres, and can be extended up to 40 square metres as a family grows. Built with tubular infrastructure technology, one unit can be assembled by four people in four hours using a single allen key. Each unit carries a unique GPS number, which provides an address and an identity. Further features include an alarm, a terrace, a roof garden, a solar panel and rainwater harvesting.

Doonya Shop and Home for Homeless by Jackie Lai was featured as an innovative example of communication design by the A' Design Award. Doonya Shop and Home for Homeless was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in Social Design in 2022. The A' Social Design Award is an international, meritocratic, just and fair design competition that rewards outstanding design of community projects, social campaigns, public installations, educational programs, sustainable initiatives, healthcare solutions, inclusive design, cultural interactions and more.
