Faculty Architecture of Kigali

Faculty Architecture is a school of architecture in Kigali, Rwanda, planned for 600 students on a site of 5,600 square metres. The design starts from a simple volume on two levels. The volume is pulled apart on opposite sides, which creates a central gap that forms an outdoor space for students. Stone is used for the exterior envelope and self-coloured concrete for the interior. Small windows face outward, while large inward-facing windows are shaded by roof overhangs. Truncated upper sections bring in daylight and improve ventilation.

Faculty Architecture of Kigali Education School by Patrick Schweitzer S&AA has been identified as an outstanding illustration of architectural design by the A' Design Awards. Faculty Architecture of Kigali Education School won the Golden A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2020. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, jury-voted, fair and ethical design award that honors superior design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
